Ep.9: Talking About Being Sick

In this episode, both Jihoon and Emily aren’t feeling well and share their symptoms. You’ll learn Korean expressions to describe sickness, pain, and comfort someone naturally.

1. Feeling Unwell

Jihoon: 몸이 안 좋아요.
Jihoon: I don’t feel well.

Emily: 어디가 아파요?
Emily: Where does it hurt?

Jihoon: 머리가 아파요.
Jihoon: I have a headache.


2. Stomachache

Emily: 사실 저도 배가 아파요.
Emily: Actually, my stomach hurts too.

Jihoon: 약 먹었어요?
Jihoon: Did you take medicine?

Emily: 아직 안 먹었어요. 그냥 쉬고 있어요.
Emily: Not yet. I’m just resting.


3. Fever

Jihoon: 열이 나요.
Jihoon: I have a fever.

Emily: 병원에 가는 게 좋겠어요.
Emily: You’d better go to the hospital.


4. Cold/Flu

Emily: 저도 감기에 걸린 것 같아요.
Emily: I think I caught a cold too.

Jihoon: 목이 아파요? 기침도 해요?
Jihoon: Do you have a sore throat? Are you coughing?

Emily: 네, 둘 다 있어요.
Emily: Yes, both.

  • 몸이 안 좋아요 → I don’t feel well
  • 어디가 아파요? → Where does it hurt?
  • 머리가 아파요 → I have a headache
  • 배가 아파요 → My stomach hurts
  • 약 먹었어요? → Did you take medicine?
  • 열이 나요 → I have a fever

3. Grammar & Notes

~이/가 아파요

  • Used to describe pain in a body part.
  • Example: 머리가 아파요 (My head hurts), 배가 아파요 (My stomach hurts).

~에 걸렸어요

  • Means “caught (an illness).”
  • Example: 감기에 걸렸어요 (I caught a cold).

약 먹었어요?

  • Literally “Did you take medicine?” → very common way of showing care.

병원에 가는 게 좋겠어요

  • Polite suggestion for more serious symptoms (like fever).
  • Example: 열이 나요. → 병원에 가는 게 좋겠어요.

-세요 (polite suggestion)

  • Polite way to suggest or give advice.
  • Example: 푹 쉬세요 (Get plenty of rest), 약 드세요 (Please take medicine).
