Ep.8: Talking About School and Work

In this episode, Jihoon talks about his life as a university student, and Emily shares about her job. You’ll learn everyday expressions that are useful both in school and in the workplace.

🏫 School (Jihoon 중심)

1. Class

Emily: 지훈 씨, 오늘 수업 어땠어요?
Emily: Jihoon, how was your class today?

Jihoon: 재미있었어요. 교수님이 친절했어요.
Jihoon: It was fun. The professor was kind.


2. Test

Jihoon: 내일 시험 있어요.
Jihoon: I have a test tomorrow.

Emily: 아, 힘내요!
Emily: Oh, good luck!


3. Homework

Emily: 과제 많아요?
Emily: Do you have a lot of homework?

Jihoon: 네, 오늘은 좀 많아요.
Jihoon: Yes, I have quite a lot today.


4. Lunchtime

Jihoon: 수업 끝나고 친구들이랑 점심 먹었어요.
Jihoon: After class, I ate lunch with my friends.

Emily: 즐거웠겠네요!
Emily: That must have been fun!


5. End of School

Emily: 오늘 수업 다 끝났어요?
Emily: Are you done with the classes today?

Jihoon: 네, 지금 집에 가는 중이에요.
Jihoon: Yes, I’m on my way home now.

Jihoon: Emily 씨, 오늘 일 어땠어요?

Emily: 바빴지만 괜찮았어요.
Emily: It was busy, but fine.


2. Meeting

Emily: 오늘 오전에 회의 있었어요.
Emily: I had a meeting this morning.

Jihoon: 어땠어요?
Jihoon: How was it?

Emily: 잘 끝났어요.
Emily: It went well.


3. Task

Jihoon: 오늘은 무슨 일 했어요?

2. Key Expressions

  • 수업 어땠어요? → How was class?
  • 시험 있어요 → I have a test
  • 숙제 많아요 → I have a lot of homework
  • 학교 끝났어요 → I’m done with school
  • 오늘 일 어땠어요? → How was work today?
  • 회의 있었어요 → I had a meeting
  • 보고서 준비했어요 → I prepared a report
  • 퇴근했어요 → I finished work
  • 고생했어요 → Good job / You worked hard
  • 보람 있어요 → It’s rewarding

3. Grammar & Notes

~었어요 / ~했어요

  • Past tense ending.
  • Example: 공부했어요 (studied), 일했어요 (worked).

퇴근하다

  • Means “to leave work / finish work.”
  • Example: 지금 퇴근했어요 (I just finished work).

고생했어요

  • Polite phrase to acknowledge effort.
  • Common in both school and work contexts.

보람 있다

  • Means “rewarding / worthwhile.”
  • Often used when talking about jobs or hard work.

숙제 vs 과제

  • 숙제 is commonly used in elementary, middle, and high school.
  • 과제 is used more in university or higher education, referring to reports, essays, or projects.
  • Example:
    • 초등학교 → 오늘 숙제 많아요. (I have a lot of homework today.)
    • 대학교 → 이번 주에 과제 제출해야 해요. (I have to submit an assignment this week.)

4. Practice

오늘 수업 어땠어요? → How was class today?
내일 ___ 있어요. → I have ___ tomorrow.
오늘 일 어땠어요? → How was work today?
지금 ___ 하고 있어요. → I’m working on ___.
가끔 ___지만 보람 있어요. → Sometimes it’s ___, but it’s rewarding.
